World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is an annual global campaign celebrated to improve awareness and understanding of Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and promote best practices among the public, One Health stakeholders, and policymakers. The campaign aims to address the urgent need to combat AMR and prevent the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant microbes. This report highlights the activities conducted by the PG Department of Microbiology during WAAW 2022. As a part of WAAW 2022, the students and teachers of the microbiology department organized an awareness rally. The rally started from the college premises and proceeded towards Puzhakkattiri town. The honorable Vice Chairman, Mr. Vasudevan, flagged off the rally, symbolizing the official commencement of the event. During the rally, the students held placards showcasing important messages and steps to be taken to prevent microbial resistance to antibiotic drugs. These visually appealing placards aimed to create awareness among the general public about the significance of responsible antibiotic use and the consequences of AMR. The Principal of the college sent messages on Antimicrobial resistance, emphasizing the importance of individual and collective efforts in tackling this global health challenge. These messages were shared with the participants of the rally and further disseminated through various communication channels. Upon reaching Puzhakkattiri town, Ms. Shameema M, Assistant Professor of the PG Department of Microbiology, delivered messages and explained the theme of the awareness programme to the students and the public. Her speech focused on the impact of AMR on public health and the critical role each individual plays in preventing its escalation. Throughout the rally, many common people expressed their doubts and concerns regarding antimicrobial resistance. The teachers and students actively engaged with the public, addressing their queries and providing clarifications to enhance understanding and awareness. MSc students from the microbiology department conducted awareness classes for the people residing near the college. They visited approximately 20 families and delivered informative sessions on AMR. The students explained the importance of appropriate antibiotic use, proper hygiene practices, and the significance of completing the full course of antibiotics to prevent the development of drug-resistant microbes. Feedback was collected from the participants to assess the effectiveness of the awareness class.
