Overview
The Department of Sociology at GEMS was established in 2012 with the aim of fostering a strong foundation in sociological theory, research, and community engagement. In 2015, it was merged with the Department of Social Work and upgraded to the PG Department of Social Work and Sociology. In 2024, the Department of Sociology was re-established as an independent department, reaffirming its academic vision and disciplinary focus. From the 2024–2025 academic year, the department introduced the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in Sociology in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). The department currently offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sociology along with a range of certificate courses including Disaster Management, Body Language, Human Rights Education, Counseling Practices, and Counseling. It also offers Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC) such as Women and Society and Disaster Management as part of the FYUGP structure. Aspiring to be a leading centre of Sociology education at the state and national levels, the department is committed to nurturing responsible professionals through innovative practices in research, leadership, service, and knowledge dissemination. It places strong emphasis on academic excellence, skill acquisition, and service learning, offering students opportunities to engage in research projects, consultancies, intervention programmes, seminars, workshops, rural exposure camps, tribal community visits, and fieldwork—thereby preparing them to respond effectively to contemporary social challenges.
