The Department of Sociology organized a programme titled “Her Story, Our Voice” on 24th March 2026 (Tuesday) from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Room No. 703. The programme was conducted as a talk session based on the film “Feminichi Fathima”, aiming to create awareness and discussion on gender perspectives and feminist narratives.
The session commenced with a warm welcome speech delivered by Ms. Nimmi Ayyappan Parambil, faculty member of the Department of Sociology. In her address, she highlighted the relevance of discussing gender issues through films and emphasized the importance of critical thinking among students.
The resource person for the session was Ms. Asfina Fabi K.T, an MSW student. She delivered an insightful talk on the film “Feminichi Fathima”, explaining its themes, characters, and the social messages conveyed through the storyline. The speaker elaborated on issues related to gender inequality, societal norms, and the lived experiences of women portrayed in the film. The session encouraged students to reflect on contemporary gender issues and engage in meaningful discussions.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Sifla K, a second-year Sociology student, who expressed gratitude to the speaker, faculty members, and participants for making the event successful.

As part of the academic requirements for the paper Social Anthropology, the Department of Sociology organized a tribal visit on October 4. The purpose of the visit was to gain firsthand knowledge and understanding of the socio-cultural life, traditions, and governance systems of tribal communities in Kerala. The students of the B.A. Sociology fifth semester participated in this educational field trip.
The Mannan tribe is one of the prominent tribal communities in Kerala, primarily inhabiting the Idukki district. They are known for preserving their traditional customs, matrilineal inheritance system, and a unique governance structure led by a tribal king. The Mannans traditionally depend on agriculture, forest produce, and allied activities for their livelihood.

An orientation program on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) was organized for the BA Sociology students on 20th September 2026 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM through an online platform. The program aimed to provide students with insights into the CUET examination and preparation strategies, particularly relevant for those aspiring for postgraduate studies in central universities.

The session featured two distinguished resource persons – Mr. Ahammed Sukhroof and Mr. Muhammed Arshad, both currently pursuing their Postgraduate studies in Sociology at the Central University of Punjab. They shared their personal experiences with CUET, preparation tips, study resources, and time management strategies. Their presentations were informative and engaging, offering valuable guidance to the participants.

The program commenced with a welcome speech by Mr. Aravind Kr., a student representative, who warmly welcomed the guests and participants. Around 30 students from various batches attended the session and actively participated in the discussion.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Anusree P.K., a final-year BA Sociology student, who expressed gratitude to the resource persons, faculty, and participants for making the event successful.

The event was coordinated by Assistant Professor Nimmi Ayyappan Parambil, who ensured the smooth conduct of the program. In the concluding segment, both the Head of the Department, Dr. Abhin P.C., and the coordinator shared their reflections on the session, encouraging students to make the most of such opportunities for academic and career advancement.

To mark the observance of World Refugee Day, the Department of Sociology at Gems Arts and Science College, Ramapuram, organized a movie screening on 20th June 2025 (Friday). The event took place at MP Narayana Menon Hall from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
The movie "Turtles Can Fly", a poignant film highlighting the struggles of refugee children in conflict zones, was selected for the screening. The film offered a deep and emotional insight into the experiences of displacement, loss, and resilience among refugee communities.
The session commenced with a welcome address and an introductory speech by Mr. Abhin P.C., Head of the Department of Sociology, who contextualized the significance of the movie in relation to World Refugee Day and global refugee issues.
A total of seventy students participated in the screening. Following the movie, an interactive discussion was held, where students shared their reflections and perspectives on the film. Faculty members including Assistant Professors Aravind K.R. and Nimmi A.P. actively engaged in the discussion, enriching it with their sociological insights and encouraging critical thinking among students.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Afeela, a final-year sociology student, who expressed gratitude to all attendees and organizers for their participation and contribution to the program.
The screening and discussion provided a valuable platform for students to engage with pressing global issues through the lens of cinema and sociology.

The PG Department of Social Work, in association with the Department of Sociology and DCPU, Malappuram, conducted a session on “An Introduction to Family-Based Alternative Care” on June 12, 2025, to commemorate World Day Against Child Labour. The program began with a welcome speech delivered by Mr. Abin P C, Head of the Department, Department of Sociology. The session was led by Mr. Fasal Pullat, Protection Officer NIC, DCPU Malappuram who delivered a comprehensive presentation on family-based alternative care and Adoption in India . The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Shamna A, an MSW trainee.A total of 52 students participated in the program, showcasing a strong interest in the topic and its relevance to social work and child welfare.
The program aimed to raise awareness about the importance of family-based alternative care in preventing child labour and promoting child welfare. The session provided a valuable learning experience for the participants, equipping them with knowledge and insights on this critical issue.

The Department of Sociology organized an offline CUET orientation session for the final year (6th semester) students on 21st February 2025, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at Room No. 701.The session was led by our distinguished alumna, Ms. Manasa A, who is currently pursuing MSW at the Central University of Kerala. Her experience and insights provided valuable guidance for the students preparing for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).The programme began with a warm welcome address delivered by Mr. Abin P.C., Head of the Department, who emphasized the importance of higher education and competitive exams like CUET in shaping students’ futures.Ms. Manasa conducted the session in an interactive manner, encouraging students to share their concerns and ask questions. The discussion covered CUET preparation strategies, time management, and useful resources. Students actively participated, raised thoughtful questions, and shared positive feedback about the session.The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by student Shijili, who expressed gratitude on behalf of all the participants for the insightful and motivating session

The Department of Sociology,Gems arts and science college, Ramapuram, organised an informative webinar on the CUET post graduation entrance exam orientation programme on 19th February 2025., Wednesday,from 7.:00 PM to 8:00PM. The session aimed to provide students with valuable insights into the CUET entrance examination and post graduation opportunites.The programme commenced with an online welcome address by Mr. Abhin PC, Head Of the Department of Sociology. The resource persons for the webinar were Mr.Ahammed sukhroof and Mr.Muhammed Arshad,both second year post graduate students at punjab University.Approximately thirty students from the Sociology Department participates in the webinar. The session was highly beneficial for final year students aspiring for higher studies,as it provided them with a roadmap to approach the CUET examination effectively.The webinar concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Abdu Rahman, final year student, who expressed gratitude to the speakers and faculty for organizing the insightful session

The Department of Sociology at Gems Arts and Science College proudly inaugurated its association for the academic year 2024-25, titled "SocioIniziare", on 31st January 2025 at 10:00 AM in the MP Narayana Menon Hall.The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by Mr. Abhin P.C., Head of the Department of Sociology, who highlighted the purpose and vision of the association for the upcoming academic year.The chief guest for the event, Dr. Mahesh C., graced the occasion with his presence and officially launched the department logo and inaugurated the Sociology Department’s official YouTube channel, marking a significant step towards enhancing digital academic engagement and outreach.Felicitation addresses were delivered by Ms. Nimmi A.P., Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, who appreciated the team efforts behind the association. Dr. Anitha Parveen, Head of the Department of Sociology, who congratulated the department and encouraged students to utilize the association as a platform for intellectual and social growth.The highlight of the event was the active participation and feedback from students, who expressed their excitement about the new initiatives and shared their expectations and ideas for the association’s future activities.The event concluded successfully, setting a strong tone for the academic year with innovative plans and enthusiastic student involvement under the banner of SocioIniziare 2024-25.
