The PG Department of Microbiology at conducted a Water Quality Assessment Programme on 19-03-2019, utilizing the Most Probable Number (MPN) test as a vital tool to evaluate the safety and purity of water sources. This initiative aimed to provide valuable insights into the microbial contamination levels in water samples collected from various sources, including households near the college. Under the able coordination of esteemed faculty members, Ms.Resna N K and Ms. Shameema M, the programme was executed with precision and scientific rigor.. To commence the programme, a team of dedicated students embarked on a systematic sample collection process. They gathered water samples from diverse locations, including taps within households, water storage tanks, and various points within the college premises. These samples represented a cross-section of water sources, enabling a comprehensive assessment of water quality. The MPN test, widely recognized for its effectiveness in quantifying coliform bacteria and fecal contamination, was employed to analyze the collected samples. The MPN test involves a series of dilutions and incubation steps to estimate the concentration of microorganisms present in the water. This method provides a reliable indicator of the overall microbial quality and safety of the water. The findings from the Water Quality Assessment Programme were instrumental in identifying potential risks associated with waterborne diseases and microbial contamination. It allowed for targeted interventions to improve water quality in specific areas, particularly within the college premises. Recommendations for water treatment and sanitation measures were made based on the results, contributing to a safer and healthier environment. This program not only contributed to the well-being of the community but also showcased the department's commitment to scientific excellence and societal welfare.
