The PG Department of Social Work, GEMS Arts and Science College, Ramapuram, officially launched Tea and Truth—an open discussion platform—on Monday, 30th June 2025. Inaugurated by Dr. Naveen Mohan, Principal of the college, the program began with a welcome address by Ms. Anitha Parveen, Head of the Department. The discussion, centered on the theme “Journeys Beyond the Destinations,” was led by Mr. Rihas KT (Assistant Professor, English), Mr. Jeevesh (Assistant Professor, Malayalam), and Ms. Nimmi (Assistant Professor, Sociology). PG students from the English and Social Work departments actively participated, with tea served during the session to create an engaging atmosphere. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by MSW student Ms. Shahana VK. A total of 33 participants attended the program, which was well-received as a meaningful platform for exchanging ideas and perspectives, as Mr. Jeevesh noted, “The importance of a discussion lies not in its strength, but in the quality and knowledge shared.”

PG Department of Social Work organized the Alumni Lecture Series-5, held on June 30, 2025, featured Fathimath Shahla E, a social worker and AH counselor, who delivered a comprehensive one-hour lecture on "Ups and Downs: Depression and Bipolar Disorders." The event saw participation from 21 students and included a welcome address by Shuhana Farvin and a vote of thanks by Shahma P P. The lecture provided valuable insights into the complexities of depression and bipolar disorders, covering symptoms, causes, coping strategies, and treatment options. It also emphasized the importance of reducing stigma surrounding mental health conditions. The session was particularly helpful for students in enhancing their academic understanding of mental health issues. The event was well-received, and the organizing committee extends its gratitude to Fathimath Shahla E for sharing her expertise.

PG Department of Social Work is organizing an open discussion program titled Tea and Truth on the theme “Journeys Beyond the Destination”, scheduled for 30/06/2025 at 2:30 PM on the college campus. The PG Department of Social Work, GEMS Arts and Science College, Ramapuram, organized an orientation programme on NET/JRF (National Eligibility Test/Junior Research Fellowship) for MSW students on 20th June 2025. The session was held in Room No. 903, PG Block. The orientation programme commenced at 10:30 AM with a welcome address by Ms. Anitha Parveen J, Head of the Department of Social Work. In her address, she highlighted the significance of clearing NET/JRF for a promising academic and research career and emphasized the role of early preparation and proper guidance. The resource person for the session was Mr. Sarath, a JRF holder and Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work. With his firsthand experience and success in cracking the NET/JRF exam, Mr. Sarath provided valuable insights into the structure of the examination, syllabus, important topics, preparation techniques, and time management strategies. He also shared reliable study materials, online platforms, and question-solving methods that could enhance the effectiveness of students' preparation.

In connection with the Blood Donor Day initiative, the first-year MSW students of the PG Department of Social Work, GEMS Arts and Science College, Ramapuram, conducted an observation visit at Government Hospital, Perinthalmanna on Monday, 16th June 2025.
The visit was coordinated and accompanied by Mr. Sarath, Assistant Professor, PG Department of Social Work. The students were divided into two groups, and introductory sessions were conducted for each group. Ms. Sajna, Blood Bank Counselor, provided a comprehensive briefing on pre-donation and post-donation counseling procedures. During the visit, students had the opportunity to closely observe various stages of blood collection, storage, and component separation, including platelets and plasma. This visit significantly enhanced the students’ understanding of the practical aspects of blood donation and transfusion services. It also provided valuable insights into the role of counseling in ensuring donor safety and satisfaction, while improving awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation in healthcare.
Additionally, the visit strengthened the students’ practical exposure and professional learning in the field of medical social work. The program concluded with a group photo session, marking the successful completion of the observation visit

PG Department of Social Work conducted, the Alumni Lecture Series 11successfully via Google Meet on 29th December 2025. The topic, “Role of Social Worker in Medical Projects,” was expertly handled by Kasthoorba K, Project Technical Support at Amrita Hospital, Kochi.

The session started with a welcome speech by Fathima Anfal, Second Year MSW Student. The whole session provided valuable insights into the role of social workers in medical settings, highlighting their contributions to patient care and healthcare teams. The resource person shared practical experiences and examples, engaging students in discussion.

A total of 27 students participated in the session, which concluded with a Q&A, enhancing their understanding of social work in healthcare. The interactive session was a great learning experience for the students, providing them with a deeper understanding of the role of social workers in medical settings. The program outcome was satisfactorily met, with students gaining a better understanding of the topic and its practical applications. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by miss Anjana K T , Second Year MSW Student.

In connection with World Environment Day on June 5, the PG Department of Social Work,GEMS ASC College Ramapuram , in collaboration with GRAF (GREEN RESCUE ACTION FORCE) and with the support of the Kerala Forest Department, organized a series of eco-restoration activities includes seed ball distribution, tree planting, and plastic waste cleaning at the buffer zone forest in Silent Valley National Park, Palakkad

The PG Department of Social Work organized a one-day SPSS workshop for MSW second-year students on 5th April 2025, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Digital Library, Library Block. Mr. Lineesh, Assistant Professor at KMCT College, Mukkam, who provided an engaging and practical introduction to SPSS software, focusing on data entry, descriptive statistics, and basic data analysis techniques relevant to social work research, led the session. The workshop enabled students to gain hands-on experience in using SPSS for their academic and research, making it a highly informative and enriching session.

The PG Department of Social Work celebrated its 10th-year anniversary with a joyful alumni meet. Former students from the 2015 to 2024 batches took part and made the event special. During the program, an Alumni Association was formed, and office bearers such as President, Vice President, Secretary, Joint Secretary, Treasurer, and Event Coordinator were elected from different batches. Five members were also selected as Executive Members. The event was a great success, with alumni promising their support for all future departmental activities. The Alumni Association also made some important decisions to strengthen the functioning of the department with the support of its members.

The PG Department of Social Work of GEMS Arts and Science College organized a workshop on Reference Citation Tools for MSW students on March 20, 2025, at 10:30 AM. The session was conducted at the Geoinformatics Lab and was facilitated by Ms. Anitha Parveen, Head of the Department of Social Work.
The primary objective of the workshop was to enhance students' knowledge and skills in using reference citation tools, which are essential for academic writing and research. The session covered various citation tools, including Zotero and provided hands-on training on how to use these tools for reference management, citation generation, and bibliography formatting.
Ms. Anitha Parveen elaborated on the importance of proper referencing in academic and research work, highlighting different citation styles such as APA, MLA, and Chicago. The practical demonstration helped students understand how to import references, organize them systematically, and integrate citations into their research papers seamlessly.
The workshop was highly interactive, with students actively engaging in discussions and practical exercises. They clarified their doubts regarding citation errors, plagiarism, and best practices for referencing. The session concluded with a Q&A segment, where students received personalized guidance on using citation tools effectively.
Overall, the workshop was well-received by the 20 participating students, who expressed their appreciation for the insightful and practical session. The event successfully equipped students with essential reference management skills, contributing to their academic and research excellence.

The keynote address was delivered by KAPS Malappuram Chapter Coordinator, Treasurer, and Assistant Professor, Sree Shankaracharya University Tirur Regional Centre Social Work Department, Swalih Sir. The keynote address set the tone for the panel discussion, providing valuable insights and perspectives on the topic.
The panel discussion was moderated by Mr Anas Tharakan, Assistant Professor, Gems ASC and featured a diverse panel of experts, including:

The panel discussion was engaging and informative, with panelists sharing their experiences, expertise, and perspectives on the topic. The discussion was followed by a Q&A session, where the audience had the opportunity to engage with the panelists.
The felicitation ceremony was led by Mr. P.M. Fasal, Mr. Safeer, and Miss Gadhaa, who delivered felicitations and appreciated the efforts of the organizers and panelists.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Miss Gopika M, Assistant Professor, PG Department of Social Work, Gems Arts and Science College.
The panel discussion was a resounding success, providing a platform for experts and stakeholders to share their perspectives and experiences on the topic. The event was well-organized, and the audience appreciated the informative and engaging discussions.
Total number of 51 outside students and 40 Social work students from Gems college where participated in the program.

The 'HUMANTA '25 National Social Work Conference, themed "Social Work 360°: Exploring Impact, Challenges, and Future Pathways" organized by the PG Department of Social Work at GEMS Arts and Science College, Malappuram, successfully concluded. This conference explored the diversity of social interventions and critically analyzed emerging opportunities and challenges in the field of social work education. More than 100 students from leading colleges and universities across India and beyond participated in the event.
Dr. B.G. Unni (Academic Director, GEMS College) inaugurated the conference. The keynote speakers included Dr. Rajendra Baikady (Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Central University of Kerala) and Suhail Babu (Expressive Arts Therapist, Social Worker). Dr. Naveen Mohan (Principal, GEMS College) presided over the conference.
GEMS College Director P.T. Hamsa, along with Muhammad Rihas, Abin P.C., Anas Tharakan, and Pooja Jayaraj (Assistant Professors GEMS college,) extended their best wishes. Anita Parveen J., Head of the Department of Social Work, GEMS College, welcomed the gathering, while Gopika M.(Assistant Professor, GEMS College) delivered the vote of thanks.
The conference served as a significant global platform for academic discourse, with the presentation of 38 research papers. Dr. Safeer A (Principal, MSTM College, Perinthalmanna) and Dr. Vinci Abraham (Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Christ College, Irinjalakkuda) served as the evaluators for the paper presentations.
By examining innovative opportunities and unique challenges in the field of social work, the conference became an inspiring platform for students and researchers alike.
