The PG Department of Social Work, GEMS Arts and Science College, Ramapuram, organized the Alumni Lecture Series – 14 on 16th March 2026 from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM via Google Meet on the topic “Role of Social Worker as a Life Skill Educator." The programme began with a welcome by Fathima Rinsha, first-year MSW student. The session was led by alumna Alby Thomas (2020–2022 batch), Life Skills Educator at Magic Bus India Foundation, Kochi, who provided valuable insights into the role of social workers in promoting essential life skills such as communication, decision-making, and problem-solving, along with sharing practical field experiences. A total of 18 participants attended and actively engaged in the interactive session. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ansha Shaji, first-year MSW student, expressing gratitude to the resource person, faculty, and participants.

                           Dr.Balagopalan Unni ,Director Academic & Research , GEMS Arts & Science College, Malappuram, Kerala (Former Chief Scientist of CSIR-NEIST Jorhat  Department of Science & Technology Govt of India) is  invited  and attended the  Session “Plant Biotechnology and Applications” , and delivered a key note lectures entitled “Isolation and functional properties of biomolecules of plants and its application”  & Natural plant Bio-resources and its medicinal properties which was held  at Village Hotel Changi, 1 Netheravon Rd, Singapore during March 26-28, 2026 

Large number of biologically important molecules could be harvested from plants and used against various types of insect pests, disease and for other useful properties. Some of the plant based molecules isolated, and their functional properties against various types of diseases in plants and insects were discussed in the presentation. Using the universal primers ITS1 and ITS4, amplification was done for the 18SrRNA, ITS1, 5.8S rRNA, ITS2 and partial 28SrRNA region. RAPD was also carried out to study the diversity of these isolates. A total of 40 random 10 mer primers were screened for RAPD study. Further, developed a SCAR marker. This can help in the detection of pathogenic isolates of Fusarium wilt causing pathogens of tomato from the non-pathogenic ones and other soil borne fungi. Crude chloroform extract of Piper betle L. was observed to be efficient in reducing Fusarium population in soil as compared to that of carbendazim. Another plant based Chebulic myrobalan (Terminalia) extract was found to be effective in controlling the disease and to enhance the silk production in silkworm. The treatment of T. chebula on food plants of muga silkworm has an indirect or direct impact on the growth of silkworm that ultimately affects the quality and quantity of the silk produced. The talks are the result of intensive study of the medicinal plants of the north-east region. Few of   the medicinal plants used for health care and its habitat have been explained in his talk. However, a large number of such plants are yet to be identified in detail for their ethno-botanical aspects

The Training and Placement Cell organized a recruitment interview in collaboration with Kiddie Bus for part-time job opportunities. The program was conducted on 05 March 2026 at 9:30 AM at M. P. Narayana Menon Hall within the college premises.
The objective of the program was to provide students with an opportunity to explore part-time employment as Online Language Trainers, enabling them to gain practical experience while continuing their academic studies. The initiative also aimed to enhance students’ communication skills and provide exposure to professional recruitment processes.
The session began with a brief introduction by the Training and Placement Cell about the role and responsibilities associated with the position. Representatives from Kiddie Bus interacted with the students and explained the nature of the job, work requirements, expected skills, and flexible work opportunities available for students.
Interested students participated in the interview process, where they were assessed on their communication abilities, language proficiency, and overall suitability for the role of Online Language Trainer. The recruitment process helped students understand the expectations of employers and gave them valuable interview experience.
The program concluded successfully with active participation from students. The initiative proved to be beneficial as it opened part-time career opportunities and strengthened the connection between the institution and industry partners. The Training and Placement Cell continues to organize such programs to support students in gaining employment exposure and developing professional competencies.

The Women Development Cell along with PG Department of English Language and Literature of GEMS Arts and Science College (Autonomous) organized a program titled The Colour Purple - Discussion Dome: Can Men be Feminists? on 11 March 2026 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM in MPN Hall. The event aimed to explore thoughts on feminism and gender, encouraging debate on gender roles and equality. The program began with a welcome speech by Ms. Ashima Thodengal, Assistant Professor and WDC Coordinator. A guest talk was delivered by Ms. Nimmi Ayyappan Parambil, focusing on what feminism is and feminist movements. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Sulthana Afroza PP, facilitating diverse viewpoints on the theme. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Fathima Hamna, S2 MA English Language and Literature. The event provided awareness about inclusive feminism and sparked meaningful dialogue among participants regarding men’s role in advocating gender equality. The program was successful in engaging attendees and promoting thoughtful reflection on societal perceptions of feminism.

The PG Department of Social Work, GEMS Arts and Science College, organized a one-day workshop on SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) for social science research on 12 March 2026 at the Digital Library. The workshop was designed to equip second year MSW students with essential skills in statistical analysis and data management, which are crucial for academic research. The session was led by Mr. Lineesh T., Associate Professor, Department of Applied Science and Humanities, KMCT College of Engineering, Mukkam. The workshop was conducted from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with active participation from second-year MSW students.
The workshop was highly interactive and practice-oriented. It began with an introduction to the fundamentals of data handling and the importance of statistical analysis in social science research. Students were first familiarized with the basics of Microsoft Excel, focusing on data organization, cleaning, and preparation for analysis. The session then progressed to SPSS, where participants were introduced to the interface and key functions of the software. Students learned how to create data files, define variables, and enter data systematically. Special emphasis was given to data coding, enabling students to transform raw data into analysable formats. A major highlight of the workshop was the hands-on training. Students worked directly with the data they had collected for their fourth semester PG dissertation. Under expert guidance, they practiced running basic statistical tests and interpreting the output generated by SPSS. This practical exposure helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world research application. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Anjana K., a second-year MSW student, who expressed gratitude to the resource person, faculty members, and participants for contributing to the success of the workshop.

The Department of Sociology, GEMS Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Ramapuram, organized a one- day urban field trip to Ernakulam City on 11 February 2026 as part of the Urban Sociology paper. A total of 34 students accompanied by 2 faculty members participated in the visit.
The field trip was organized under the theme “Urban Spaces and Social Life” with the objectives of providing students exposure to urban social life beyond the classroom.

The PG Department of Social Work, GEMS Arts and Science College (Autonomous), successfully organized the Association Inauguration Ceremony of “SOCIORA” on 22 January 2026 at 11:00 AM in the MP Narayana Menon Hall. The programme commenced with a welcome speech by Ms. Anitha Parveen J, who warmly welcomed the dignitaries, faculty members, and students, and highlighted the relevance of the association in promoting academic excellence, leadership, and professional competence among social work students.
The ceremony was formally inaugurated by Mr. Subeesh, District Probation Officer, Malappuram, who delivered the inaugural address. He emphasized the critical role of social workers in probation services, juvenile justice systems, and community welfare, and encouraged students to uphold ethical practice and social commitment. The programme featured felicitations by Dr. Abdul Samad Wise, Principal, who appreciated the initiatives of the Department of Social Work and motivated students to actively participate in academic and extension activities. Ms. Gopika M and Mr. Sarath K, faculty members of the Department of Social Work, also offered felicitations, emphasizing the importance of student associations in developing leadership and teamwork.
A special felicitation was extended to Ms. Firousiya, Association Secretary, in recognition of her contribution to organizing and coordinating departmental activities.During the programme, awards were distributed to students in recognition of their academic excellence in semester examinations and for other achievements, motivating students to strive for higher performance. The inaugural session witnessed the participation of around 40 postgraduate students, along with faculty members of the department.
Following the formal session, the programme continued in the afternoon with cultural programmes organized by the students. The cultural events provided a vibrant platform for students to showcase their talents through various performances, fostering creativity, unity, and a sense of belonging within the department. The cultural session added an engaging and celebratory dimension to the association inauguration. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Anas Tharakan, Faculty, Department of Social Work, who expressed sincere gratitude to the chief guest, principal, faculty members, student coordinators, and participants for their collective efforts in making the programme successful.

The UBA Cell in association with IQAC organized an Orientation Program on Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) on 4 December 2025 at M.P. Narayana Menon Hall, GEMS Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Malappuram. The session was attended by 47 students from the MSW and Sociology departments. The program was inaugurated by Dr. Naveen Mohan, Principal, followed by remarks from Dr. Abdul Samad, Vice Principal, and Dr. Finose A, IQAC Director. The welcome address and coordination were handled by Anas Tharakan, UBA Coordinator. The resource person, Shri. Akhil GS, Project Coordinator (RCI), Kerala Agricultural University joined to the program online and delivered an insightful orientation on the objectives, components, and implementation strategies of UBA, focusing on village adoption, community engagement, and student participation in rural development initiatives.
The session also included an interactive discussion where students clarified their doubts regarding field-level activities, survey methods, and project opportunities under UBA. The program effectively enhanced the students’ understanding of UBA’s role in strengthening the link between higher education institutions and rural communities. It encouraged them to become active participants in community-centered development processes. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, marking the session as informative, engaging, and beneficial for students preparing for field-based academic and developmental work.

The Women Development Cell of GEMS Arts and Science College organized a Talk Session on celebrating International Women’s Day themed ‘ The Colour Purple’ on 10 March 2026. Ms. Ashima Thodengal, Assistant Professor and WDC Coordinator set the tone for the session. The program was inaugurated by Dr. Abdussamad, Vice Principal, who acted in place of the Principal. Guest speaker Ms. Aysha MP addressed “Leading from Day One: Redefining Authority for the Next Generation”, inspiring participants to redefine leadership roles. Dr. Shibila A. delivered a talk on “Challenging Gender Stereotypes in Everyday Life: Understanding, Unlearning, and Transforming Society”, imparting awareness and empowerment regarding gender issues. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Fathima Hamna. The session achieved heightened participant awareness, empowerment in leadership, and commitment to challenging gender stereotypes, contributing to the overall goal of women’s development.

The PG Department of Social Work organized an expert lecture titled “Schizophrenia: Clinical
Perspective and Social Work Interventions” on 4 March 2026 at 9:00 PM for MSW students.
The session was conducted by Mr. Muhammed Althaf, Psychiatric Social Worker, Olive – An
Institution of Mental Health, Ernakulam.
The program began with a welcome address by Ms. Fidha Sherin M., First Year MSW student,
who warmly welcomed the resource person and participants. The expert lecture provided
valuable insights into schizophrenia, focusing on its clinical features, symptoms, causes, and
treatment approaches. Mr. Muhammed Althaf also elaborated on the role of psychiatric social
workers in assessment, psychosocial intervention, rehabilitation, family counselling, and
community-based mental health care. The session helped students understand the importance
of a multidisciplinary approach and the practical aspects of social work intervention in mental
health settings.
The session was highly interactive and informative, enabling students to clarify their doubts
and gain a deeper understanding of mental health practice. A total of 26 students attended the
session.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Shifa Nesrin, First Year MSW
student, expressing gratitude to the resource person for sharing his expertise and to all
participants for their active involvement in the session.

As part of its extension and outreach initiatives, the Department of Computer Science, GVHSS Pullanur, organized an Expert Interaction Programme titled “Databases in the Era of Big Data and Cloud Computing” on 20th January 2026 at 11:00 AM for second year DBDO students. The programme was conducted with the support of IQAC to extend academic exposure beyond the regular curriculum and to familiarize students with contemporary developments in database technologies. The initiative aimed to strengthen industry–academia linkage and enhance students’ understanding of real-world applications of databases in modern computing environments.
The session was handled by Mr. Anoos Babu P K, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science, GEMS Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Ramapuram, who served as the external expert for the programme. He delivered a comprehensive lecture on the transformation of traditional databases in the context of big data and cloud computing. The talk covered topics such as the evolution of database systems, relational and NoSQL databases, data scalability, cloud-based storage solutions, security challenges, and the growing demand for data-driven technologies. Practical illustrations and real-time use cases were incorporated to make the session engaging and relevant for higher secondary students.
The extension activity witnessed enthusiastic participation from the students, who actively interacted with the resource person and clarified their academic and career-related queries. The programme significantly contributed to enhancing students’ awareness of emerging IT domains such as data science, cloud computing, and database administration. The Department of Computer Science and IQAC jointly acknowledged the programme as a meaningful outreach effort that promoted experiential learning and career orientation, and recommended the organization of similar extension activities in the future to support holistic student development.
