The PG Department of Social Work, GEMS Arts and Science College (Autonomous), is organizing HUMANTA 26, an International Conference on the theme “Transforming Social Work: Addressing Emerging Needs, Scope, and Challenges”, on 11th February 2026 at the Prem Nazir Audio-Visual Theatre and Research Centre.

The conference deliberations focus on key sub-themes such as promoting mental wellbeing and the role of social workers, social work with vulnerable populations, interdisciplinary collaboration, migration, urbanization and community transformation, technology and digital innovations in practice, the future of social work education, family and child welfare, gender-responsive social work, green social work and environmental sustainability, as well as crisis intervention and disaster response.

The conference begins with the inaugural session led by Dr. B. G. Unni, Director of Academics and Research, GEMS Arts and Science College, who formally inaugurates the program and emphasizes the relevance of transforming social work education and practice in today’s rapidly changing world.

The program features eminent international and national guest speakers addressing contemporary issues shaping the future of the profession. Dr. U. L. Muhammed Ashker, Post Doctoral Researcher at the University of Malaya, Malaysia, and Senior Lecturer at the National Institute of Social Development, Sri Lanka, delivers a session on “Social Work in Global Perspective: Challenges, Innovation, and Future Directions,” providing insights into the profession’s global developments and emerging responsibilities. Prof. Imrul Kabir, from the Department of Social Work, Jamalpur Science and Technology University, Bangladesh, presents on “Social Work in the Era of Climate Change: Interventions for Sustainable Adaptation,” focusing on the role of social work in climate resilience and sustainable community interventions. The national guest speaker, Dr. Reshma Bharadwaj, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, speaks on “Emerging Trends Shaping Contemporary Social Work Practice,” highlighting new directions, challenges, and opportunities within the discipline.

HUMANTA-26 hosts paper presentation sessions that encourage scholarly contribution and research dissemination. These presentations are reviewed and guided by an expert panel consisting of Dr. Shiju Elias, Principal of Alphonsa College, Thiruvambady; Dr. Safeer Atheekkadan, Principal of MSTM Arts and Science College, Perinthalmanna and President of KAPS Malappuram; Dr. Vysakh C. M., Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, RC Payyannur; and Dr. Mohammed Shafi K., Head of the Department, PG Department of Social Work, SNDP YSS College, Perinthalmanna.

The Department of Multimedia, GEMS Arts and Science College (Autonomous) successfully organized the MEDIORA ’26 – Association Inauguration on Thursday, 5 February 2026, at 9:30 AM in the MP Narayana Menon Hall.

The event was inaugurated in the presence of the Chief Guest, Mr. Favour Francis, who is a renowned Actor, Director, Script Writer, Brand Consultant, Creative Trainer, and Mentor.

In his inaugural address, the chief guest shared valuable insights on creativity, storytelling, branding, and the evolving scope of multimedia and visual communication industries. His interaction motivated students to explore innovative ideas, develop professional skills, and understand real-world media practices. The session was highly engaging and inspiring for the aspiring media professionals.

A total of 99 students from 1st year, 2nd year, and 3rd year BA Multimedia actively participated in the programme. The event provided a platform for students to interact with an industry expert and gain exposure beyond classroom learning. 

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the chief guest, management, faculty members, organizing committee, and students for their wholehearted support and cooperation.

The Charity Club of Gems Arts and Science College (Autonomous) organized a Pothichoru Distribution Program on 04 February 2026 as part of the initiative “Hridyam – Vayareriyunnavarude Manassariyan.” The program aimed to extend support to people in need by distributing meals and encouraging a spirit of compassion and social responsibility among students.

GEMS has achieved an unparalleled milestone by securing First Place among self-financing colleges at the Calicut University C-Zone Arts Festival. Highlights of this historic "Double Hat-trick" victory include:

• First Place: Vattappattu (Third consecutive year)

• First Place: Kolkali

• Second Place: Oppana (Competing against 36 teams)

• Third Place: Mappilappattu Group (Competing against 46 teams)

The Women Development Cell of GEMS (WDC) , in association with Club Dream Unlockers, organised an academic enrichment programme titled “EmpowerNET: Mastering Paper I Strategy” on 29 January 2026 at the Research Centre. The programme aimed at empowering postgraduate students by providing them with a clear understanding of the structure, syllabus, and strategic importance of Paper I in the NET examination. The session was conducted from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students aspiring for academic and research careers.


The Welcome Address was delivered by Club Dream Unlockers Co-ordinator Ms. Hina Hanan. It was presided over by WDC Co-ordinator Ms. Ashima Thodengal. The session was led by Mr. Mohammed Asif K, a reputed UGC NET/JRF coach and faculty member at JDT Islam VHSS, Calicut. Through an engaging and well-structured presentation, the resource person elaborated on the core components of the Paper I syllabus and shared practical preparation strategies, time-management techniques, and smart approaches to answering questions. Special emphasis was laid on integrating postgraduate-level learning with NET preparation, thereby helping students align their academic studies with competitive examination goals. The interactive nature of the session enabled participants to clarify their doubts and gain valuable insights into effective preparation methods. Participants shared valuable feedback on their experience. The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Hamna (2nd Semester Student, MA English language and literature).


The programme was highly beneficial in enhancing students’ confidence, motivation, and clarity regarding UGC NET preparation. It successfully encouraged participants to adopt a strategic and disciplined approach towards their academic pursuits while nurturing aspirations for research and teaching careers.

The PG Department of Social Work hosted the 12th session of its Alumni Lecture Series on January 30, 2026.

As part of its extension and experiential learning initiatives, the Department of Multimedia, GEMS Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Ramapuram, organized a Channel Visit and Field Trip to Manorama News, Aroor, Alappuzha, on 25 January 2026. The programme was designed to provide students with practical exposure to professional news production environments and to enhance their understanding of real-world media operations. The visit commenced at 9:00 AM with the departure of students and faculty members from the college campus, followed by an orientation session at Manorama News that introduced students to the organizational structure and daily functioning of the news channel. 

Students were then taken on a studio visit, where they observed live news production setups, broadcasting equipment, camera operations, and control room activities, and gained insights into news gathering, editing, and transmission processes through demonstrations by media professionals. After the lunch break, a technical demonstration session familiarized students with camera handling, newsroom workflows, and post-production techniques, followed by an exposure session on live broadcasting and field reporting that highlighted the challenges of real-time news coverage. 

The programme also included a career guidance session in which industry experts shared their professional experiences and discussed career opportunities in journalism, broadcasting, editing, and digital media. An interactive feedback and interaction session enabled students to clarify doubts and reflect on their learning experiences. The visit concluded at 4:30 PM with the return of participants to the college. The programme proved to be highly beneficial, as it enhanced students’ practical understanding of media production, improved their awareness of industry standards, and effectively bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and professional practice. The Department of Multimedia expresses its sincere gratitude to the team at Manorama News, Aroor, for their cooperation and support in making the programme informative and successful.

We have officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sunstone School of Technology and Sunstone School of Management to enhance academic and professional opportunities for our students.

The Computer Science Department of GEMS Arts and Science College (Autonomous), in association with Sunstone School of Technology and Sunstone School of Management, organized a Workshop on “Excel Skills for Workplace Efficiency” on 29 January 2026 at 11:00 AM in the Computer Science Lab. The program aimed to enhance students’ practical knowledge of Microsoft Excel and its applications in professional and organizational environments. The workshop was designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and workplace requirements by focusing on essential data-handling and productivity tools.
The session was led by Dr. V. Prabakaran, Campus Head, Sunstone Education Technology Pvt. Ltd., Coimbatore, who served as the guest speaker. During the workshop, Dr. Prabakaran provided an insightful overview of Excel functionalities used in real-time workplace scenarios, including data organization, analysis, and efficiency improvement techniques. His interactive approach and practical demonstrations enabled students to understand how Excel skills contribute significantly to decision-making, reporting, and operational efficiency in various industries.
The workshop witnessed active participation from students of the Computer Science Department, who engaged enthusiastically throughout the session. The program successfully improved students’ technical competence and confidence in using Excel for professional tasks. Overall, the workshop was highly beneficial and aligned with the institution’s objective of enhancing employability skills among students through industry-relevant training programs. The event concluded with positive feedback from participants, marking it as a meaningful academic initiative.
